The entries were judged by FBTRC Honarary President, Tony Faulkner,
and by members of the Federation during the AGM Weekend on April 27th.
Once again we had entries of a very varied subject matter,
which entertained the assembled Fed members in the far-flung region that is
known as Milton Keynes. Again digital recordings were to the fore, which meant
that sound quality was of a very high standard. This being so, editing and
overall presentation and appeal are now crucial criteria in arriving at the winner.
Again the format was that entries were prejudged by our President,
Tony Faulkner and then being judged by the entrants' peers at the AGM meeting.
Obviously no one could vote for a recording with which they were connected. The
entrant's details were not announced until after the tapes had been judged, this
was to aid impartiality. The total marks were then divided by the number of judges
eligible to vote and an average was arrived at. Many thanks to Geoffrey Smallwood
for acting as the independent scrutineer.
Unfortunately, with agreement of all those present, two entries
were disqualified for not conforming to the rules of the contest, namely they were
considerably over the time limits. (The rules were reprinted in an earlier edition
of Recording News this year). The rules must be adhered to and we must enforce them
otherwise, if we overlook a transgression for one, everyone will think that it is
fine to ride roughshod over the rules. The time limits are those that apply to the
International Contest, where the timings are strictly adhered to. Entries must be
presented as "complete and ready to play", it is not the organisers' or
judges' responsibility to decide which section is to be played and where to finish;
this is entirely the responsibility of the entrant.
The last thing we want to do is dissuade members from entering,
but the rules are there and will be enforced in the interests of all the entrants.
Having got down from my soap box, here are the final placings.
1st (Barry Cole Trophy) | Mike Dickins | "Glider Pilot" |
| 2nd | Heather Myers | "Shrewsbury Flower Show" |
| 3rd | Robin Bester | "Jupiter" from "The Planets" (Holst) |
| 4th | Cardiff Recording Club | "October" (Shostakovich) |
Other entrants were David Holland, Jim Purcell, Barrie Davies and Tony Adkins.
Many thanks to all those who supported this year's contest and we hope
that even more of our members will present us with their interesting recordings in both
the coming BARC and the BSRA Contest for 2003. Yes, now is the time to get those microphones
out and get out and about on location bringing back creative and informative material.
